Issue 10: Summer 2008

Welcome to the Summer edition of our newsletter!

IT Issues

The team has been busy working to secure some new IT arrangements for the website and is delighted to announce that these are now in place. Thank you for bearing with us over the past few weeks. We trust that you were not inconvenienced by the work we undertook. We look forward to the next phase of development and hope that you will see the benefit of this work shortly.

Safe Strangers, Safer Buildings

This new initiative launched at the House of Commons on May 7th. Based on Home Office guidance the code has been piloted in the North West and has been supported by charities, the Police and educationalists. The code helps children identify trustworthy adults who would be able to help them and also buildings they could enter in an emergency.

Much of this work has been supported by our colleagues at Childs Eye Media, who create resources for the youngest children. This is the review of the firefighter DVD, one of a series which could support work about people who help us.

After watching the firefighter section, my two boys aged 4 and 6 rushed off to put together an action packed firefighting drama of their own, full of detail and a wide vocabulary that they had picked up from the video...my kids loved it!

I watched the firefighters session with my class of Year 1 children. They were all inspired and enthusiastic, going home to their parents and getting them to check their smoke alarms! A very good resource which is an inspiration. Thank you!
Catherine Billingham, KS1 teacher, Northamptonshire

Brilliant for inspiring children’s role play.
Foundation Stage Forum Reviewer

Excellent!
Laura Henry, Early Years Consultant

Made with children, for children, through the eyes of children.
Dr Hannah Mortimer, Educational Psychologist

Both the Nursery and Reception classes have found both “People who help us” DVDs invaluable for the delivery of our topic-based work. They are extremely child-friendly and informative, and along with visits from actual policemen, firefighters, post lady and lollipop lady, the children have had their imaginations and learning brought to life.

Summer’s Here

We hope that the early signs of good weather will mean that we can all enjoy the outdoors this summer. We would urge you to impress on children and young people the importance of safety when out and about. We have some great resources to support safe cycling, from the Cycle Helmet initiative; there are video clips from the Environment Agency about safety near the water and the RNLI and Coastguard’s contribution for beach safety and safety at sea.
