Plumbing The Depth
Before you start fishing it is important to know how deep the water is in your swim. The best
way to do this is to plumb the depth using a plummet. There are various designs of plummet to
choose from as shown in the illustration below:

- Before trying to plumb the depth use the minimum amount of shot required to secure the float to the line.
- Then attach plummet and set the float at the depth you think it is.
- Swing the line out in front of you, taking note of the different depths you may come across. This starts to
give you a mental picture of the contours of the lake bed.
- Should the float disappear under the water, then the line is not deep enough; however, if the float lies on
the top, then you are too deep (see the illustrations below).
- Keep adjusting until only the float tip is showing in the water. This may take several attempts but this is
time well spent in the long run.
