Reels
There are basically three types of reel suitable for coarse angling. They are the fixed spool, closed face and centre pin reels.
Fixed Spool Reel
The fixed spool reel is the most popular, and easiest to use reel of the three types. As the name suggests the spool is fixed
and the line is wound around the spool by the bale arm. It is ideal for float and feeder fishing. A correctly loaded spool
will have line filled to within 2-3 millimetres of the spool lip. This will make casting more efficient. Generally the more
ball bearings the reel has the better the quality and expensive the reel will be.
Closed Face Reel
The closed face reel is mainly used for rivers, but can be used in windy conditions when fishing still waters. This reel is
ideal for float fishing. The spool of line is placed behind the outer case, and has a push button bale arm to release the line.
Centre Pin Reel
The centre pin reel is considered a specialist item, and is not suitable for the novice angler. The reel is excellent for
trotting a float down river, allowing line to run freely from a revolving drum.
Reel Maintenance
As with all fishing tackle the maintenance of your equipment is very important:
- Clean with damp cloth after use.
- Check behind spool for grit or dirt.
- Ensure enough line on spool.
- Ensure reel operates smoothly.
- Place reel into reel case.
